Using timed math quizzes well

Short, frequent, low-stakes practice is one of the best-supported techniques in learning research: Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review rated practice testing as having "high utility". A few tips for arithmetic fluency:

• Accuracy first, then speed. Start untimed. Add a timer once most students score above 90%.
• Narrow the range. Working on the 7s? Set smallest and largest to cover just those facts rather than the whole table.
• Race yourself, not each other. Students can retry a new set and compare their own times in the result screen.
• Mix operations late. Mixed sets are harder because students have to decide which operation to use; that's useful once each is secure.
