How to calculate a test score
Divide the points earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. For a 25-question test with 4 wrong: 21 ÷ 25 = 0.84, so 84%. If questions carry different point values, add up the points earned on each question first, then divide by the total points available.
Why a missed question costs more on a short quiz
On a 10-question quiz, one mistake drops the score by 10 percentage points, the whole width of a letter grade. On a 40-question test the same mistake costs 2.5 points. That's worth remembering before a single short quiz decides anything important; the dot strip above shows it: change the total and watch each dot's share of the score.
