Why definitions from the same list make better distractors
When the wrong options come from words students studied in the same unit, they have to know the difference between, say, arid and barren, not just recognise a familiar word among strangers. That's the same logic Isabel Beck and colleagues recommend in Bringing Words to Life: vocabulary sticks when students have to discriminate between related meanings.
Tips
- Keep definitions short and in student-friendly language; long textbook definitions give away the answer by length.
- Group 8–15 words per quiz. Fewer than four and there aren't enough distractors; more than twenty and it becomes a stamina test.
- Turn on spelling questions for spelling-bee practice. Short answers forgive capital letters, and you can switch off typo forgiveness in the settings.
Questions teachers ask
What format does the word list need?
One word per line, then a separator, then the definition: "arid – having little or no rain", "arid: having little or no rain" or a tab between them (handy when pasting from a spreadsheet).
Can I use it for foreign-language vocabulary?
Yes. Put the target-language word on the left and the translation on the right. Choose "pick the word for a definition" to have students recall the target-language word.
Is my list saved?
The list stays in this page until you leave. Once you open it in the quiz maker, it is kept as your draft and saved to My quizzes when you share it.
